Greenwich Peninsula

On the Greenwich Peninsula it all started in 2003 with a meeting between representatives of the Greenwich Multi Faith Forum, the borough's Ecumenical Borough Deans, the Borough Council, and Meridian Delta Ltd (the developer appointed to build new homes, offices and schools on the Greenwich Peninsula and an arena and entertainment district in the O2: formerly the Millennium Dome).

The decisions:
  1. that the faith communities would serve the new development together, doing together those things which we can do together, such as chaplaincy work on the construction sites and managing a building for faith communities to use; and doing separately those things which we cannot do together, such as worship;

  2. that all communication between the borough, MDL and the faith communities would be through individuals: which meant the faith communities appointing one individual to handle communication; and

  3. that a multifaith steering group would be appointed to oversee all of this on behalf of the faith communities. (We later established a Council of Reference as well so that faith leaders could be consulted together).
And that's what's happened. We have a team of eight volunteer chaplains working on the construction sites (one Sikh, one Muslim and six Christians of a variety of traditions); and we are planning the use of a building together.
