| Church Builds Housing | 13th Mar '07 |
| Occasionally, a church or Christian agency will build housing. The English Churches Housing Group and the Shaftesbury Housing Group are examples, and some churches and chapels have been turned in to affordable flats or accommodation for single parents, homeless, or people with learning disabilities. If you have stories to share do contact us. |
In addition, some churches have sold off their land for redevelopment and housing. Usually the land has been sold leaving the church with little control afterwards. However, as in the case of two churches in west London, in partnership with YMCA and the local council etc, churches have been involved in building new houses and flats. The history of the Roxeth Gate example can be found in the Resources section paper headed '106 Agreements'.
In Yorkshire there is an unusual rural example of this where the Anglican Diocese of Bradford has decided to use some ancient Glebe land for two new housing units to help young local families stay in a popular Dales tourist village. You can read the account on the diocesan website or the local newspaper.
Please contact us if you have other examples or stories to share about how the church has occasionally built new houses, especially if other people can learn from your experience |
