| The Growth Areas | 20th Feb '07 |
| The Government has identified the south east as the chief area of growth. |
South East It has then specified four Growth Areas:
- Ashford, Kent - capacity for 31,000 new homes by 2033
- London Stansted Cambridge Peterborough - M11 corridor with up to 197,000 new homes by 2026
- Milton Keynes and South Midlands - 211,000 new homes by 2021
- London Opportunity Boroughs/ Thames Gateway - capacity for 128,500 new homes by 2016
Type 'Growth Areas by Location' in to www.communities.gov.uk search and you will find links to the local sites of each Growth Area (http://www.communities.gov.uk/index.asp?id=1503184 link on 08.02.07).
These areas are the largest developments of new housing schemes in the country. Churches in these areas have identified and in some cases released ministers, usually part time, to engage and advise on the process, as the developments are on such a large scale.
If you live in one of the Growth Areas of the south east, you might already know that your key local network contacts are:
- Simon Ellis (URC, who until recently was working in Ashford, and now works with the Thames Gateway south of the river)
- Steve Williams (Anglican, Thames Gateway officer north of the river)
- Tim Clapton (Development Chaplain for Milton Keynes)
- Bob Purser (Churches Officer for New Communities in Northamptonshire)
There are a lot more people in this network, but these key people above can signpost you to other people in their area.
Steve Williams has a useful website and various resources on www.thamesgatewaychurchofengland.com.
Tim Clapton has a useful website and various papers on www.mkchaplain.org.uk. Tim Clapton has recently been involved in the local process 2020VisionMK. A consultation has been held and discussion articles have been posted on www.2020visionmk.com.
Other Areas In addition to the above, Simon Taylor, County Ecumenical Officer for Devon, has collated further statistics for the other 'high demand areas' which need the following built before 2026:
- South East: 36,000 new homes per annum
- South West: 20,000 per annum
- East of England: 25,000 per annum.
Simon has produced a summary handy guide called 'Christian Involvement in New Communities' which can be used in Church Councils and small group discussions or a Clergy Fraternal. See the Resource section.
Contact us if you have statistics for other areas. |
