Church in New Housing Areas

Welcome

GfE 'Signpost' Resource Paper
Church Planting Presentation
Welcome to this website looking at specific issues and opportunities for the Church in new housing areas.

It is estimated that up to an extra three million homes will be needed in England in the next 20 years. So how should the Church respond?

This website, from Churches Together in England, has been written in response to three chief concerns of local and regional church leaders. These quick links lead to the general areas which explore these concerns:
  1. How to engage with the planning process
  2. Creating community, especially where there is no community
  3. Considering the best expression of church in new housing areas

Our Aims are to:

  • facilitate networks among those involved in planning for new communities
  • share good practice
  • help church leaders and Churches Together groups to get involved in policy and decision making re new housing
  • discover what opportunities are available to the churches
  • disseminate information
This website is an introduction for those who do not have previous knowledge in housing, and for those who have some considerable expertise and experience to share with others.

In addition to the quick links of key areas and the search facility, the extra Resources section will build up a portfolio of various papers, seminar reports, and general information related to specific topics, as well as resources for use in clergy and community groups, church councils and various discussion groups. Contributions are welcome.

We trust that all the information on this website is accurate, but ask you to check the material against the advice of your own local planning authority. Churches Together in England cannot be held accountable for advice given. In addition, we do not necessarily share the views of the contributors included.

Most of the information gathered comes from the well known large new housing areas, especially the four Growth Areas of south east of England where certain church leaders work specifically with planners and congregations to help in the development task.

However, we are well aware that most church leaders will have some new housing in their area too, and so this website is for the wider network, hoping that local ministers and church leaders will adapt the information to their own local context.
